The lime kiln is located in the village of Ceplis - 11 km from the center of Bauska and 4 km from Mežotne on the Bauska - Mežotne way. It can be accessed by car, bicycle, or event boats by Lielupe River. Take the bus from Bauska bus station to the “Ķieģeļu fabrika” bus stop and continue by foot.
Zemgale has used local resources - clay and dolomite - for centuries in this region. Already during the reign of Duke Jākobs construction materials were made here. The river Lielupe had great importance as it was used as a waterway to deliver the construction materials. In the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, an industrial complex was established in the village of Ceplis - a lime kiln, a brick kiln, a tile factory, an oven tile factory and a glazing workshop, etc.
Until the nationalization in 1940, the factory was owned and operated by Count Anatoly Livens. During the Soviet era, the factory complex continued to operate until the 1990s and was then subsequently scrapped, leaving behind an industrially degraded environment. Some of the buildings from the 19th century have survived. Currently, Igo Music Management Ltd. is working on a project to develop these buildings and is creating an art and music center “Ceplis”.
The historic Lime-kiln building is now open for viewing. This unique industrial building with a massive chimney in the center can be observed in two floors, the chimney itself can be viewed from the inside. On the second floor, there is an exhibition room with historical bricks. Currently “Igo Music Management Ltd” is working on a project for the development of these buildings and is creating the art and music center "Ceplis". The windows of the former dormitory at "Ceplis 10" building are decorated with paintings of 12 "Lightning Plenary" artists.
The lime burner is located 50 meters from the bank of the Lielupe River and is also of great interest to water tourists.
